Why I Started Research on Gloiopeltis

Gloiopeltis is a species of red algae traditionally found along the rocky coasts of East Asia.
In Korea, this seaweed is commonly known as Pulgasari, and several species such as Gloiopeltis furcata, Gloiopeltis tenax, and Gloiopeltis complanata are naturally distributed along the Korean coastline.

For many years, I have worked in the field of water treatment and aquaculture engineering.
Through my experience in aquaculture sites, I learned that water quality management is the most critical factor for successfully cultivating marine organisms such as abalone and shrimp.

One of the most serious problems in aquaculture systems is the accumulation of ammonia and carbon dioxide in the water.

When these compounds accumulate, the growth rate of abalone or shrimp slows down, and in severe cases large-scale mortality may occur.

In many reports, the direct causes of mortality in aquaculture are often attributed to Vibrio bacteria or viral infections.
However, when the underlying processes are examined more closely, it becomes clear that environmental stress caused by ammonia and carbon dioxide accumulation plays a major role in triggering these outbreaks.

Because of this, I have long been interested in nature-based water treatment methods using seaweed.

If the primary causes of aquaculture failure are mortality and poor growth, and these problems originate from ammonia and carbon dioxide accumulation, then solving this environmental issue is essential for sustainable aquaculture.

Why Gloiopeltis?

Seaweeds perform photosynthesis, which allows them to:

absorb carbon dioxide
release oxygen
absorb nitrogen compounds from the water

For this reason, seaweed can function as a natural biological filtration system in aquariums and aquaculture tanks.

However, most seaweed species grow too large to be cultivated at high density in indoor tanks.

For example:

kelp (Saccharina)
wakame (Undaria)
sargassum (Sargassum)

These seaweeds grow into long fronds, making them unsuitable for compact indoor cultivation systems.

Gloiopeltis offers an interesting alternative.

Unlike large brown algae, this red algae species remains relatively small and can potentially be cultivated at high density.

Another advantage is related to light efficiency.
Indoor cultivation systems inevitably rely on artificial lighting such as LED lamps.
Compared to many green or brown algae species, red algae like Gloiopeltis are capable of performing photosynthesis under relatively low light intensity, which may significantly reduce energy consumption.

Characteristics of Gloiopeltis

Gloiopeltis has several unique characteristics that make it attractive for both aquaculture and industrial applications.

small size
suitable for high-density cultivation
capable of photosynthesis under relatively low light conditions
rich in dietary fiber
edible seaweed
relatively high commercial value
potential functional properties such as anti-cancer and neuroprotective activity (currently under research)

Traditionally, dried Gloiopeltis has also been used as a raw material for seaweed glue, a natural adhesive historically used in East Asia.

The Beginning of Our Gloiopeltis Research

Recently, I began studying a new cultivation technology for Gloiopeltis together with three colleagues: KS Choo, H Lee, and IY Kang.

After establishing Hypobio Co., Ltd. in Mira-ri, Soan-myeon, Wando County, South Korea, the first initiative we launched was the Seaweed Bio Lab dedicated to Gloiopeltis research.

Our research currently focuses on two main goals:

Developing a technology to cultivate Gloiopeltis at high density in urban environments
Developing a water purification system based on seaweed photosynthesis

KS Choo has been operating a land-based seawater aquaculture farm on Soan Island for more than 16 years, where he cultivates abalone juveniles together with photosynthetic diatoms.

H Lee has been engaged in large-scale offshore cultivation of kelp, wakame, and gompi seaweed for over 12 years, and also operates an offshore abalone farm.

IY Kang has spent over 40 years in the construction industry, working on buildings, commercial facilities, apartments, and industrial structures.
He joined our team with the goal of building and operating the first urban Gloiopeltis cultivation facility once our technology is fully developed.

If this research succeeds, it could lead to several important outcomes:

natural water purification in aquaculture systems
development of new seaweed-based food resources
urban aquaculture facilities where seaweed cultivation improves water quality while premium seafood such as abalone, shrimp, lobster, or king crab can be sold

(At present, however, the economic feasibility of full urban aquaculture for marine animals is still under consideration.)

Future Research Direction

Currently, I am experimenting with a cultivation method using a Gloiopeltis seed plate system.

This method involves attaching Gloiopeltis to a three-dimensional porous substrate and installing the substrate inside cultivation tanks.

The system operates as follows:

seed plates are installed inside tanks
LED lighting stimulates photosynthesis
seaweed growth contributes to water purification

If successful, this system could represent a new form of urban seaweed cultivation, enabling seaweed production even in indoor environments.
